NAB chief urges federal support for ownership diversity
The National Association of Broadcasters has worked for two decades to help women and members of ethnic minority groups advance in the broadcasting industry through various programs, yet the number of television and radio stations owned by members of ethnic minorities remains unacceptably low, writes NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith. Federal lawmakers have a duty to enact programs to help support diversity in broadcasting, Smith says.

"30 Rock" creator and star Tina Fey has issued an apology to the Black community for episodes of the show that featured the use of blackface and asked streaming services carrying the episodes to remove them. Late night talk host Jimmy Kimmel has also apologized for using blackface in some of his sketches.

The National Association of Broadcasters is seeking an extension from the Federal Communications Commission on the deadline to implement audio descriptions of video content for accessibility purposes. NAB is asking for compliance deadlines to be moved back 10 months to accommodate broadcasters struggling with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Technology

Eddie Bauer, Magnolia Pictures and Ben & Jerry's have joined other brands including Patagonia, the North Face and REI in pulling their ads from Facebook over the social media giant's stance on content moderation. Several of the boycotting companies have issued statements urging Facebook to rethink policies that permit ads containing hate speech and violent rhetoric.

"World News Tonight" with David Muir on ABC continued its ratings-topping streak last week as it marked 13 consecutive weeks of being the most popular evening news program. Nielsen data shows the newscast has attracted more US viewers than any other television show for the past three weeks.
