The pandemic-driven push for maximum cleanliness could cost the hotel industry up to $9 billion a year in work hours and new materials, the hotel management company Hotel Asset Value Enhancement estimates. The HotelAVE report does not mention labor savings offsets through digital advances such as contactless check-in, which other studies have cited.
Miami-Dade County will provide hotel rooms to people unable to isolate from the coronavirus as part of a response to Florida's single-day coronavirus case record set Wednesday. Measures also include deploying a 100-member surge team to visit several cities identified as hot spots.
Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., announced that it will not reopen its hotels and theme parks July 17 as planned and will set a new date when it receives guidance from the state government. The company said it had been told not to expect reopening guidelines before July 4.
Travelers may view smaller, independent hotels as less crowded and less constrained by big-chain guidelines and thus able to be more nimble when it comes to coronavirus-related safety and guests' personal needs, Leading Hotels of the World CEO Shannon Knapp says. She adds that such hotels still have strong protections but can offer more creative ideas for social distancing.
Hotels, resorts and inns are adapting their properties and their services to meet the needs of wary, health-conscious guests -- providing such options as standalone villas (with chef) at Bluefields Bay Villas in Jamaica or cottage rentals at Cedar Lakes Estate in New York. Tour operators are altering their offerings, too, as Paragon Guides in Vail, Colo., uses llamas as schleppers for multiday hikes, and Tentrr focuses on turnkey glamping.
Some hotels can rely on guests with deep pockets to snap up some serious social distancing by renting out the entire property. Six Senses Zil Pasyon in the Seychelles goes for $372,000 a week, while Kilkea Castle in Ireland is a relative bargain at $7,885 a night.
