Ogilvy Health, Chimney tap America's scariest mask wearer

Ogilvy Health and Chimney created a 60-second public service announcement for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's call for face mask spots, which features a man wearing a hockey mask in the style of Jason from "Friday the 13th." The humorous spot features Jason walking around New York as he sadly talks about being misunderstood, until a girl gives him a face mask and copy says, "Wearing a mask can be scary. Not wearing one can be deadly."

The Ad Council's "Love Has No Labels" campaign, which was created by R/GA and won an Emmy, has returned to support the fight against racial injustice. The campaign is being promoted by its sponsors, which include Johnson and Johnson and Walmart.

An analysis of Medicare claims data from January to mid-May showed over 325,000 beneficiaries were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the period, almost 110,000 of them were hospitalized and over 28% of those who were hospitalized died. The CMS report found that Black Medicare recipients were four times more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19 than white beneficiaries.

Roku courts brands with new ad unit, channel guarantees

Roku announced a sponsored pause break ad format during its virtual NewFronts presentation, along with proportional pricing for 15-, 30- and 60-second spots. The streaming platform also unveiled Roku Reserve, which is like YouTube Select and Facebook Reserve, and enables brands to secure the top 1% of channels on its platform.

Brands in the US and Turkey that want to run Instagram ads for the first time will no longer be required to connect to a Facebook ad account. "The new option is unrelated to calls to boycott advertising on Facebook over its role in the spreading of hate and misinformation, adding that it has been testing the feature for several months," writes David Cohen.

D.C. Circuit Court pulls no punches in opinion on drug price disclosure rule

In a victory for drug manufacturers, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit last week both affirmed the lower court opinion that set aside the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule calling for drug manufacturers to disclose drug list prices in direct-to-consumer (DTC) television ads, and chastised the Department of Health and Human Services for acting "unreasonably." The appellate court found that "there is no reasoned statutory basis for [CMS'] far-flung reach and misaligned obligations." According to Coalition for Healthcare Communications Executive Director Jon Bigelow, "It is gratifying to see such a clear court decision." Read more.
