Amazon is creating The Climate Pledge Fund, which will invest $2 billion worth of venture capital funding in technology advances among multiple industries to mitigate climate change. Amazon wants the fund to help it and other businesses attain net-zero carbon emissions within 20 years, CEO Jeff Bezos said.
Walmart's self-driving vehicle partner, Gatik, focuses on delivering groceries from massive distribution centers to smaller warehouses, the journey it calls the "middle mile." The company partnered with Walmart in 2019 and the vehicles are now running seven days a week, Gatik CEO and co-founder Gautam Narang said.
Warehouse-management systems, robotics and other technology are enabling warehouses to meet customer demand for same-day and next-day delivery, as well as increase worker safety and compensate for labor shortages, writes Curt Croley of Zebra Technologies. "[T]his trend will become more noticeable as retail and warehouses continue to merge into one fulfillment center, all with the intent of delivering packages ever faster and more accurately to the end consumer," he writes.
Uncertainties in the supply chain are unlikely to go away, but manufacturers have nine key questions to start evaluating supplier reliability, writes Steve Schabel, chief sales and marketing officer at Alexandria Industries. Ask about supplier resiliency, flexibility to respond to unexpected needs and how much duplication of services they can provide, he suggests.
Leaders can earn employee trust by checking their assumptions about discrimination, educating themselves on historical context and following through on promises to improve, writes Alaina Love. "Taking issues of inclusion and diversity seriously now prepares you for the changes you'll experience in the next decade," she writes.
Workplace bullies must be dealt with, and that can include confrontation but also recording each incident, talking with other victims and reporting the bullying to HR, writes Paul LaRue. "Whenever you confront a legitimate bully or abusive individual and take a stand for what's right and yourself, you will always do the right thing," he writes.
