App tells if office workers are not socially distanced

A social-distancing app which alerts someone when a colleague is too close is being used by Network Rail. The technology uses audio and Bluetooth signals to detect if users are in close proximity to one another. 

Facebook may be ordered to change data practices

Irish regulators have started an inquiry into Facebook's movement of data on European users to the United States. The concerns follow the European Court of Justice ruling the EU-US Privacy Shield failed to protect privacy and data protection rules.

L'Oreal launches make-up recycling across UK shops

Cosmetics giant L'Oreal is introducing make-up recycling bins across 1,000 UK stores in an environmental push. Its Maybelline brand and recycling firm TerraCycle will install the recycling points in branches of Tesco, Boots, Sainsbury's and Superdrug.

Dune's new trailer drops

The film, an adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune books, is directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose previous work includes Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Zendaya lead the cast.

Philanthropy, it is popularly supposed, transfers money from the rich to the poor. This is not the case. In the US, which statistics show to be the most philanthropic of nations, barely a fifth of the money donated by big givers goes to the poor. A lot goes to the arts, sports teams and other cultural pursuits, and half goes to education and healthcare. At first glance that seems to fit the popular profile of "giving to good causes". But dig down a little.
