'Doomsday glacier' is riddled with giant, melting channels

The Thwaites glacier, a giant chunk of ice almost the size of Great Britain, is cut trough by huge seafloor channels that are allowing warm seawater to infiltrate and attack its underside. Understanding the glacier's rapid melting is key in creating accurate climate models.

Oxford University vaccine trial paused

Final clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, have been put on hold after a participant had a suspected adverse reaction in the UK. AstraZeneca described it as a "routine" pause caused by "an unexplained illness".

Slack shares plunge 

Slack shares fell as much as 20 per cent in extended trading on Tuesday after the company's growth stayed steady with no pandemic spike. Zoom, in comparison, grew by 355 per cent.

Philanthropy, it is popularly supposed, transfers money from the rich to the poor. This is not the case. In the US, which statistics show to be the most philanthropic of nations, barely a fifth of the money donated by big givers goes to the poor. A lot goes to the arts, sports teams and other cultural pursuits, and half goes to education and healthcare. At first glance that seems to fit the popular profile of "giving to good causes". But dig down a little.
