Hey there,

Here's what's been going on in WordPress lately:

Even though it seemed highly unlikely just a couple of months ago, WordCamp Europe took place despite all odds. The conference was held online, and it was a huge success considering the turnout - clocking in at 8,756 attendees! It's probably safe to say that no real-life WordPress conference will ever reach such numbers. Here's a summary of the event, and the highlight of day one - the talk between Matt Mullenweg and Matias Ventura. 🎟️

The road to WordPress 5.5 has officially begun. Matt Mullenweg will lead the team, together with Jake Spurlock and David Baumwald. There are some interesting things in the agenda, and even a proposed idea for the next WordPress release to be lead by an all-woman squad. Here's Josepha Haden on this, and more. 🛣️

Proposal: update all git repositories to use "trunk" instead of "master". The Black Lives Matter movement is making a mark on many companies and industries. In the dev world, the most interesting case is GitHub. The platform will give up the word "master" used for branches, in order to avoid any references to slavery. Here's more on what this is about. 🌲

Duplicate Post joins Yoast. Duplicate Post is a popular plugin for, well, duplicating your blog posts. A simple concept, but highly useful for any blog that produces a larger volume of content. At the time of writing, the plugin is active on more than three million websites! Team Yoast saw the potential of the plugin and decided to make it part of their family. Learn more about this acquisition. 👐

To a similar tune, Automattic invested $4.6 million in New Vector, a company specializing in providing decentralized, secure communication infrastructure for businesses and individuals. Read: decentralized and secure messaging. The solution lets users link messaging-based platforms like Facebook, Slack, Discord, or Telegram through a global network. Sounds a bit techy, I give you that, but Matt Mullenweg has had a good track record recognizing market trends, so perhaps we should all pay attention to what's going on in this industry. Read more. 💸
