Clean water in a time of COVID
Dear Reader,
Reporter Zak Podmore and photographer Leah Hogsten recently traversed the Navajo Nation to document the impact of the coronavirus on rural communities where many homes lack running water. With the support of the national Solutions Journalism Network, Zak and Leah met with tribal leaders and nonprofits working to make sure every Navajo Nation resident has access to clean water and to secure water rights for the Utah portion of the reservation. Their stories will be published in the coming weeks.
For the past 13 months, Zak has been reporting from San Juan County, bringing to light the unique political and environmental issues at play, and building the trust that creates the opportunity for deeper storytelling. Zak is one of two Report for America Corps members at The Tribune, and one of 225 working in newsrooms across the United States. While his salary is covered in part by RFA, The Tribune must raise an additional $32,500 to meet the program's match requirements.
We are honored that The Lund Foundation has issued a $5,000 challenge grant to match donations raised in this drive.
"San Juan County is one of the most beautiful and complex parts of our state. Zak's reporting has brought long needed scrutiny to the area. We are honored to play a role in his work." — Jeramy Lund
