Verizon completes DSS trials, readies nationwide rollout

Verizon touted successful tests of technology for dynamic spectrum sharing on low-band frequencies, which the carrier said should allow it to introduce 5G service nationwide this year. Millimeter-wave high-band spectrum will remain Verizon's primary means of deploying its 5G Ultra Wideband service.

Report: US downloads swifter than Europe's during lockdowns

US networks have proved faster than those of European countries during lockdowns prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, a Georgetown University business school report says. Fixed broadband down speeds averaged 138 megabits per second from March 2 to June 7 compared to 106 Mbps across Germany, France, Italy and Spain with researchers citing heftier network investments among US providers as the main reason.

CenturyLink expands bare-metal computing services

CenturyLink is making changes in its bare-metal computing services, integrating the capability with the CenturyLink Dynamic Connections Network. In addition, the telecom is upgrading the use of bare-metal servers, also known as white-box servers, within the CenturyLink Cloud service.

New "SpongeBob" film latest to skip theaters

ViacomCBS will debut "SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" as premium video-on-demand content early next year before making it exclusive to the CBS All Access streaming service, rather than bringing it to theaters. Nickelodeon and Paramount had originally intended to release the film in May, then pushed the date back to Aug. 7 as a result of the pandemic.

Dems push bill to boost overbuilds, fund broadband service

Congressional Democrats have proposed spending $60 billion to help fund broadband competition in areas defined as "underserved" as part of an infrastructure bill totaling more than $1.5 trillion. The measure would also earmark $100 billion to subsidize broadband service for low-income and recently unemployed families, provide remote learning access to children and teach digital skills.

Billions of records on internet users' activity left exposed

A server with billions of records of internet users' online activity and personal data -- including names, purchase history, home addresses, web browsing history, and hardware and operating system details -- was left unsecured by Oracle-owned BlueKai, which provides tracking data for marketers' use. BlueKai tracks many of the world's biggest websites, including Amazon, Forbes, ESPN, Glassdoor and The New York Times.
