High-end hotels shift guest list to pandemic fighters

Millions of front-line medical workers have found distinctive respite in homes away from home that bustled as luxury hotels prior to the coronavirus outbreak. Tony New York city properties such as Four Seasons New York and Midtown Manhattan were among leaders in a US industry effort that made at least 3.4 million rooms available.

Atlanta developers dream big with forthcoming hotels

Selig Development is working on the $530 million 1105 Peachtree in Atlanta, a mixed-use project that will include a 178-room Epicurean Hotel. CIM Group plans to include hotels in its $5 billion multiuse project on 40 acres of The Gulch in downtown Atlanta, and Urban Creek Partners is eyeing a 300-room hotel in its 70-acre Quarry Yards mixed-use project.

N.C. luxury hotel's construction on schedule

The 22-story JW Marriott Charlotte in North Carolina recently topped out. The 381-room hotel connected to the convention center is due to be completed in April.

Tax aid in peril for $63M Kansas City, Mo., hotel

Developers of a proposed $63 million luxury hotel in Kansas City, Mo., appear to have only a slim chance of securing the $45 million in tax incentives they seek from the city. The Tax Increment Financing Commission of Kansas City has turned down the application, while at least four City Council members have indicated they'll vote no and a fifth negative vote will kill the request.

Hotel restaurants at luxury properties may see a surge in popularity on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic, Ovolo Hotels' food and beverage chief, Vincent Lombino, believes. Guests' faith in strong brands -- and their ability to afford and achieve stellar levels of cleanliness -- will lead top restaurants back inside hotels as they were in the "good old days," 20 to 40 years ago, he says.

High-end Club Med ski resorts see upturn in business

Club Med's luxury and five-star ski resorts are leading the company's charge in the return to skiing holidays, with more sales now than at the same time last year. "People are demanding privacy and space in the current climate, and our chalets and 5T spaces offer both, with the added advantage of resort facilities and activities on your doorstep," Club Med's Estelle Giraudeau says.
