The Federal Communications Commission will vote on a scheme to implement the new Broadband Data Act on July 16, but agency head Ajit Pai said the organization needs more funding to accomplish the task. The law requires the FCC to beef up its process for collecting data on the availability of high-speed broadband in rural areas.
Verizon's UK-based production studio and laboratory will host an accelerator program with the country's Digital Catapult that will work on developing 5G applications for companies. The carrier will also contribute its edge computing and 5G facilities to the London program, in which participants will study how the technology can help enterprises tackle problems.
Microsoft has launched a public preview of Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection for Android, which offers signature-based malware detection and protection against phishing and unsafe network connections. A version of the Defender ATP is now generally available for Linux, and an iOS antivirus app is in the works.
A new mobile tool from Samsung uses artificial intelligence and drones to give engineers data about cell-tower positioning. Samsung plans to introduce the technology, which works on tablets and phones, before the year ends.
