The Transportation Department is making improvements in the airline refund process and already has "taken pro-consumer action on refunds," Secretary Elaine Chao writes. She reiterates that the department is working with airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure layers of protection and prioritize the welfare of passengers and employees.

Larger terminals, fever-detecting cameras, virtual line-ups and biometrics-enabled electronic boarding gates could all be in the future for airports as officials work to ensure the safety of both travelers and staff post-pandemic. "We're trying to do everything we can to make sure that our airport terminals are a safe environment, and we're making sure that we're doing everything we can to make it healthy for people to come in," says Justin Erbacci, chief executive of Los Angeles World Airports.

Pandemic drives installation of touchless tech

Touchless check-in and baggage services have become must-haves for airlines and these systems have quickly been installed across hundreds of airports in the US. "The capability has been there for a while, but I guess before it was quite difficult to justify the expense when you have relatively new kiosks," said Ryan Ghee of Future Travel Experience.
