Change to The Algorithm newsletter subscription

Dear Algorithm readers,

Two weeks ago, I sent out my 100th issue since taking over The Algorithm. The world has been so hectic, I didn't even notice. Nonetheless, I allowed myself a retroactive celebration to reminisce about how much The Algorithm has changed.

One hundred issues ago, this newsletter had a little over 30,000 readers. When I inherited it, that seemed like A Very Big Number. I'd never written a newsletter before! Let alone regularly covered AI. The responsibility felt immense, but the hard work paid off. Week by week, the readership steadily grew, and in 2019, The Algorithm was nominated for a Webby Award, the highest honor in digital media.

At issue #50, quickly nearing 60,000 readers, we decided to shift strategies. I had been sending out two issues a week, meant to keep people on top of AI news. But through feedback from our readers, it became clear that people wanted more analysis and in-depth features.

So we dialed our weekly issue count down to one, and I collaborated more regularly with other writers at Tech Review to feature their work. Both gave me more time to report out previously untold stories, like China's grand experiment in AI education and the messy reality of OpenAI, and to trial new formats, as with the interactive on the complexities of algorithmic bias, which was ultimately short-listed for the Sigma Awards.

I think by now you already know what I'm going to say next. Roughly 100 issues in, and with nearly 95,000 readers, it's time for another evolution. We still plan to send The Algorithm out once a week, sharing the same caliber of analysis, research, and features. But we also want to add some extra magic. Think exclusive sneak peaks to upcoming content, or discussion questions that you can weigh in on. Perhaps AMAs with AI bigwigs, or memorable guest curators.

To do that—to do it right—we will need more resources. And so, we ask that you stay with us as The Algorithm becomes a newsletter for paid subscribers only, starting on July 10. When you become a MIT Technology Review subscriber, you'll be supporting our journalism but also get access to all of our content online. This includes all of the articles I've linked to each week with a "Read more here;" all of the content from our print magazines, which we republish online in digital form; and all of our famous annual lists, like 10 Breakthrough Technologies and 35 Innovators under 35.

What does that mean logistically? If you are not yet a subscriber, you can subscribe now and you'll continue to receive the Algorithm every Friday. You'll also have complete, paywall free access to the Technology Review site.

I hope the past 100+ issues are evidence enough for the value that this subscription will offer you. Thank you for your continued support of our journalism, and see you on the other side.
